Lakhnauti

Lakhnauti
Located north of Nadia, near the present day site of Gaur in the Malda district of West Bengal, Lakhnauti was founded by Lakshamansena (1175-1206). After sacking Nadia, Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji occupied Lakhnauti and made it his seat of power (1204-1205). From this time onward, until the end of the 14th century, the territory governed from Lakhnauti was bound by Sun-darbans on the south, by the Brahmputra River on the east, and by the Kosi River on the West. In the Delhi sultanate, the province of Lakhnauti came to be perceived as very rich. As the nobles adminis-tering the province had the tendency to rebel, Lakhnauti came to be called Lughlakpur (city of insurrection).
